CIMG0441Goverdhan / Agra, July 25th 2015: The ancient tree of Peelu (Salvadora Persica) at Surdas’s Samadhi in Parasoli, near Goverdhan is to be cloned in order to continue its lineage. The tree is known to have existed since 15th century. The clone of the tree will be planted at Sur Kuti, the bhajan sthali (meditation place) of Surdas, situated on the bank of Yamuna in Agra.
Sur Das was one among the eight saint singers (ashtachap kavi’s), whose religious fervor and poetry matched well with the intensity of his devotion to Krishna. Surdas could express his devotion through his talented voice and poetry unsurpassed by anyone. He was also known as blind singer. Krishna himself came to rescue him when he fell in a well.
The Office bearers of the Soor Smarak Mandal have begun the exercise of cloning the tree, which was the favorite tree of Surdas. They have recently visited Parasoli for research. Five hundred years old Peelu tree under which Surdas meditated still exists in Parasoli. Shri Bhubnaesh Shrotriya, Secretary of the trust, Dr. Girish Chandra Sharma, Vice President and Ram Khiladi Sharma manager of the trust visited Parasoli, a few days back. They did research on the trees of Peelu and Karli which are about 500 years old.
Environmentalist Dr. S.K. Rana said that the conditions of Parasoli and Surkuti area are very similar. Therefore there is no harm in trying to make clone of this tree and plant it in Sur kuti. It should be noted that the Vraja region is most suited for the Peelu trees. But there are only a few trees left in Vraja which are as old as 500 year old.
Bhubnesh Shotriya said that they have been corresponding letters with the Forest Research Institute. He further said that the botanical scientists of the Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University have begun working in this direction. They have collected the sample of the soil for testing.
